Hemel In Strong Push For Vital Second Spot

Hemel maintained their charge for second spot with a dominant win over the Knights on their first ever trip to Pennine Way, to record a double.

In warm but overcast conditions, the match kept a good crowd thoroughly entertained, Kippax physically overpowered but winning plaudits for the way they kept coming back. The Final score 46 - 12 means that the Stags are still in position to move into the seemingly vital second place. No team in the history of the RLC National have gone on to win the Final from outside the top two.

Hemel pressed from the outset and, on the quarter hour, got a second set after a grubber through by Jason Price was fumbled in the shadow of the posts.

From the scrum, highly impressive loose forward Saimon Lomoloma found himself in acres of space and strolled over to open the scoring.

On the next set, Stags came up with another wonderful sucker punch, prop James Howitt smashing through six tackles before offloading to Matt Mizzi who stepped a couple more for a majestic score.

In their first real attack Knights looked to have gone over at quarter time but Barry John Swindells did superbly to hold up Chris Knowles.

Gaining another double set, after BJ Swindells had been taken out but advantage played, Hemel moved the ball to the left for winger Matt Fielder to go over in the corner to make it 16-0.

Knights won the short kick off and then a penalty but lost possession as they threatened and on their next attack, Chris Hall lost the ball with the line begging.

Again Chris Hall was a threat but once more as he looked set to score, BJ Swindells was up to the task and brought him down just short.

Hemel lost Eddie M’Baraga with a serious looking mouth injury and the visitor’s promise finally won reward as half time approached, hooker Mark Boswell crashing over after good approach work from the Kippax pack.

Just before the break Stag Joey Crompton-Meyer had a try disallowed for a forward pass and BJ Swindells put in a superb 40/20 only for Olly O’Mara to lose possession on the set from the scrum.

Ten minutes after the break, Hemel won a heel against the head and before Kippax could re-group, Aaron Hall went 80 metres for a sensational try.

Price thought that he had scored soon after on the back of an O’Mara run after but the Knights held him out.

That seemed to give the visitors renewed confidence to move the ball around, Chris Hall finally getting his reward on the back of quick hands, James Woods landing his second goal.

With Kippax again on the attack, their luck was summed up when Price intercepted and fed Jamie Acton and he went 60 metres to cross and it go no better for the Yorkshiremen when they looked to have scored but the touchdown was ruled out for an apparent knock on when grounding.

Hemel finished impressively, Aaron Hall again a rampaging menace and he fed BJ Swindells who grabbed a try to go with his six goals.

Price again proved to be the master of the intercept, going in for the eighth home try with another from half way.
