| We Get Old Because We Stop Playing |
On a bright and sunny Sunday in Mitcham, Surrey, South London Storm Masters played hosts to Medway Dragons Masters out of Storms new home ground Mitcham RFC. Masters is a new concept for over 35’s who can adapt to the adage that ‘We do not stop playing because we get old; we get old because we stop playing’. With Strom already making their debut to Masters a month prior, it was down to the Dragons to dust off the cobwebs, dig out those boots and take to the field. The Dragons had been in training for 6 weeks and were ready for the challenge of the mighty Storm who paraded a former London Broncos Super League Player in their ranks. The game was played an appropriately steady pace, but with great skill. Medway’s Graham McManus, a Former Hull Transport RLFC player, making his comeback after 26 years out of Rugby League showing immense finesse at half back leading the Dragons around the park. The sun was kind and the pitch in good condition with both teams playing an open game. The game was a great spectacle, with several red shorts (50 – 59 years young) being fashioned. It was a great showcase of rugby league and superb to see new players to the game at a new entry level. Masters rugby league was launched to make rugby league accessible for the older gentleman; the rules are adapted to cater for the different age bands taking part, with the main rules being no champions, no winners or losers, but just to buy your opposite player a drink after the match. Masters rugby league is becoming increasingly popular here in London and the South East, there are currently 5 teams up and running including; Medway Dragons, South London Storm, London Skolars, Political Animals and newly established Harlequins Masters.
